They should not be interpreted as a ranking of honest and dishonest consumers. Regional results can be influenced by product mix, local popularity of specific brands, average product age, cross-border sourcing, availability of reference examples and the proportion of difficult items submitted for authentication. A region with more vintage luxury goods may naturally produce more inconclusive cases than a region dominated by current-season products.
Geographic data is most valuable when combined with category and seller signals. A high-risk product from a route associated with elevated counterfeit exposure may justify deeper inspection, while a low-risk transaction can remain streamlined. In both cases the final decision should still be based on the item itself.

Country-Level Authentication Signals
Country-level authentication data adds useful detail to the regional picture. Italy recorded an unidentified rate of 18.7% in 2022 and 15.3% in 2023, showing improvement but remaining elevated within the selected comparison. The Philippines moved from 11.8% to 11.1%, while Japan increased slightly from 10.6% to 11.0%. Australia moved more sharply from 5.8% to 8.3%.
Several European and Middle Eastern markets recorded lower selected rates. The United Kingdom changed from 6.4% to 6.7%, France from 7.0% to 6.2% and the United Arab Emirates from 7.0% to 7.2%. Spain recorded 18.4% in the latest available observation, while Taiwan was reported at 6.2%.
A practical country dashboard would pair unidentified rate with submission volume, average product value, category mix, seller tenure and escalation outcome. That combination is more useful than the rate alone because a small market with difficult vintage submissions can look riskier than a large market with standardized products. Authentication decisions should use country-level data as context rather than a shortcut.

U.S. State Authentication Variation
State-level data shows that variation can remain significant even within one national market. California moved from 7.7% unidentified in 2022 to 7.3% in 2023, while Kansas moved from 12.1% to 10.6%. Texas changed more sharply in the opposite direction, rising from 8.3% to 12.5%. Nevada increased from 3.6% to 5.3% and New York from 8.2% to 9.4%.
Other states moved downward. New Jersey declined from 7.9% to 5.4%, while North Carolina increased from 7.4% to 8.5%. Georgia recorded 9.6% in the latest selected observation. These numbers show why a nationwide average can hide meaningful operational differences in the types of products and cases reaching authentication systems.
For marketplace risk scoring, state information is best treated as one weak signal among stronger product-specific evidence. It may influence whether an item receives automatic approval, additional image requirements or manual review, but it should never reduce the burden of examining construction and brand identifiers. A well-designed system is sensitive to geographic patterns without becoming geographically deterministic.

Authentication becomes more commercially important as resale grows. Consumer Trust, Social Commerce and Authentication Demand
Consumer behavior adds another reason authentication matters. In the selected U.S. survey, 59% of consumers said they would seek more affordable options such as secondhand if tariffs or trade policy made apparel more expensive. That response suggests resale can gain buyers when new-product prices rise, bringing more first-time shoppers into a market where trust standards may be unfamiliar.
Search and personalization are also reducing the friction of finding used goods. Approximately 48% of consumers said personalization, search and discovery can make secondhand shopping as easy as buying new. Once discovery becomes easier, trust becomes a more visible part of the purchase decision. Buyers can find the right model quickly but still need confidence that the listing is genuine, accurately graded and protected if the item arrives differently from the description.
Social commerce complicates that problem. Around 39% of younger shoppers in the selected survey had purchased secondhand apparel through a social-commerce platform during the prior 12 months. Social channels can connect buyers and sellers efficiently, but listing structures, photography, seller identity and return protections may be less standardized than on managed resale platforms.

Luxury Resale Search, Condition and Authentication
Luxury marketplace behavior shows that buyers are increasingly willing to purchase products with age, visible wear and incomplete original presentation. In the selected marketplace dataset, sales of Fair Condition items increased 32%. Searches for wedding dresses rose 247%, vintage engagement-ring searches rose 198% and wedding-shoe searches increased 321%. The marketplace also reported a community exceeding 40 million members.
That is why authenticity and condition must remain separate fields. Authenticity asks whether the underlying item originates from the claimed brand or maker. Condition measures wear, damage and restoration. Originality measures whether the components remain as first produced. Provenance describes ownership and transaction history. A useful resale listing can show all four rather than compress them into one quality badge.
For buyers, the distinction improves price transparency. A heavily worn authentic item may still deserve strong value because rarity or design drives demand. A pristine counterfeit does not become valuable because it looks new. Authentication protects that distinction by preventing visual condition from overriding manufacturing evidence.

Enforcement statistics illustrate how counterfeit goods can reach consumers through fragmented shipping channels. In the selected U.S. customs data, de minimis shipments accounted for 97% of intellectual-property-rights seizures and approximately 31 million counterfeit items. Category-level data shows that counterfeit exposure is not limited to luxury fashion. Authorities seized approximately 3.74 million pharmaceutical items with an estimated genuine MSRP of about $129.6 million. Sunglasses accounted for 771,533 items and more than $414 million in estimated MSRP. Consumer electronics reached 727,307 items and roughly $125.6 million. Perfumes, personal-care goods, toys and automotive or aerospace products also appeared in substantial quantities.
Small parcels are relevant to resale because they can support direct-to-consumer counterfeit distribution, social selling and low-volume arbitrage. A marketplace may encounter the goods only after the original shipment has cleared into consumer ownership. Authentication therefore acts as a second line of defense after customs screening, especially when the product is later listed by a seller who did not manufacture or import it.
