The label therefore hides a processing problem. Reported world exports exceeded $166 million in 2023, down from roughly $186 million in 2022. Reported imports exceeded $252 million in 2023 compared with about $266 million in 2022. The difference between import and export totals should not be treated as a hidden market-size gap. Customs reporting can differ because of timing, valuation, reporter coverage, re-exports and the way partner records are compiled.
The correct use of the series is comparative rather than absolute. It can show where this defined full-grain category is exported, where manufacturers import it and how concentrated those flows are.
