Apparel contracted more sharply, contracting by approximately 13%. Developing-country exports fell about 7%, compared with around 3% for developed-country exports. The contrast matters because apparel is highly exposed to discretionary demand, retail inventories, seasonal order cycles and changes in consumer confidence.
The long-term sports-goods signal points in the opposite direction. Annual imports of sports goods were approximately $15 billion in 1996 and almost $64 billion by 2022. Those figures extend beyond clothing, so they should not be read as a direct athleisure market series. These are not equivalent totals to the China series because the supplier, product chapter and market structures differ, but together they demonstrate how lifestyle-relevant apparel is spread across many mature and developing consumer markets.
The practical benchmark therefore extends beyond market size. A strong lifestyle product needs to work across movement, care, styling and repeated use, while the industry needs supply chains capable of delivering that product consistently across regions. Spain is just above $2.09 billion, Korea around $1.85 billion, Hong Kong approximately $1.79 billion, Canada about $1.73 billion, and Italy and Poland both near $1.58 billion.
The geographic spread matters as much as the ranking. Large values appear across North America, Western Europe, Central Europe, East Asia and Oceania. That breadth suggests that knitted apparel is not dependent on one fashion system or climate. Bangladesh's 2023 destination profile demonstrates a substantial market for this side of lifestyle dressing. Italy imported approximately $615.8 million of HS62 apparel from Bangladesh, while Japan imported about $590.5 million. The Netherlands reached roughly $515.2 million, Switzerland $486.7 million and India $425.4 million. Austria and the Czech Republic were both above $370 million, Denmark and Australia above $338 million, and Mexico around $287.5 million. The United Arab Emirates recorded approximately $278.0 million, closely followed by Korea at $275.4 million.
Knitted and non-knitted products therefore solve different parts of the same wardrobe problem. Knits generally excel in movement, softness and body accommodation. The regional pattern combines large mass-market demand with diverse retail channels ranging from value basics to premium casual and sport-influenced clothing.
Europe shows the broadest cluster of high-value destination countries. Germany imported about $4.58 billion of Chinese HS61 apparel, France $2.79 billion, the United Kingdom $2.61 billion, Spain $2.09 billion, Italy $1.59 billion and Poland $1.58 billion. In the Bangladesh HS62 series, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Denmark are all prominent. Latin American destinations include Chile, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay and Central American markets. Their values are smaller than the largest North American or European reporters, but the breadth of destinations demonstrates the geographic reach of globally sourced apparel. Africa presents a similar pattern. Japan is unusual because it ranks near the top of both datasets. The country imported approximately $6.61 billion of Chinese HS61 apparel and about $590.5 million of Bangladeshi HS62 apparel. That dual position suggests demand for both comfort-oriented knitted products and structured woven garments. It also raises the quality requirement for suppliers serving a mature market where fit, finishing and consistency can strongly influence retailer relationships.

Korea also has meaningful values in both series. These cross-category markets provide useful examples of lifestyle demand that combines casual knits with more structured clothing.
India stands out for a different reason. It is a major apparel and textile producer, yet it imported roughly $425.4 million of Bangladeshi HS62 apparel in the selected data. Trade relationships cannot be reduced to a simple producer-versus-consumer map. Countries can specialize by fibre, garment type, price tier or retail segment and import products even when they have large domestic manufacturing bases.
The United Arab Emirates, at approximately $278.0 million of Bangladesh-origin HS62 imports, provides a clear Middle Eastern demand signal. Mexico, at approximately $287.5 million, does the same for Latin America/North America-linked retail flows. These values reinforce the broader pattern: lifestyle-relevant clothing is supported by many trade corridors, and each corridor can have different expectations around construction, price and product presentation.
